Las Vegas - FAQ's
Do I need a visa?
If you are a British citizen travelling on a valid machine readable passport with a return ticket and staying in the US for less than 90 days, you qualify for the Visa Waiver Program. For more details visit the US Embassy website - www.usembassy.org.uk.
What is ESTA and do I need it to travel to the US?
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization is required for all travellers on the Visa Waiver Program. The enhanced security requirements mean you have to fill in an online form prior to travelling. You submit your application at www.esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
Will I need any cash on arrival?
If you plan to take public transport to your hotel then yes and if you are using the airport trolleys you will need to break a note as they use coins.
Is the Strip far from the airport?
No it is a 5-10 min taxi ride from the airport which should cost approx $20.
How much do I tip in the US?
The usual amount is 15% (Americans can't understand our 10% rule and think we are all stingy) but if you have had good service more is normal.
Who do I have to tip?
Anyone who gives you a service of some kind - from the bellhop to waiters. The standard wage in America is low so be warned - tips are expected often regardless of the level of service.
What is the time difference between here and Las Vegas?
GMT -8 (-7 in summer) - so generally you can phone home from 8am - 2pm from Vegas.
What is the weather like?
Please see our General Information chart for average temperatures, rain and hours of sun.
What is the dress code in the casinos?
Generally this is far more casual than you would expect and it is not uncommon in the summer months to see most people wearing shorts and flip flops on the casino floor. Swimwear is not permitted however and the dress code is alot stricter in the evening at bars and clubs where you will have to check with the individual venues in advance.
Is topless sunbathing allowed?
Vegas is unusually prudish in this respect so the only areas topless sunbathing is permitted is where you see a sign for a European pool - these are usually an extra charge too!
